Why your Local Services Ads aren’t getting calls

The Local Services Ads block with three businesses listed.
Being in the block is not the same as being chosen.

Your ad is live, the budget is going out, and the phone is quiet. In almost every account I look at, the cause is one of six things — and only one of them is money.

1. You are not actually verified

Listings that haven’t finished onboarding still appear, but Google places them below the businesses that have. You end up paying to be the option people scroll past. Check the badge status first: Google Verified explained covers what’s missing and how long it takes to fix.

2. Your service area is too wide

Proximity is one of the strongest signals in the system. Cover half the county and you rank weakly everywhere instead of strongly where you actually work. Tighten to the area you’d genuinely travel to on a Tuesday afternoon, and watch what happens.

3. Nobody is answering

Miss calls repeatedly and your ranking slides. Since 1 October 2026 it can also cost money, because some missed calls inside your own opening hours become chargeable. If you can’t answer between eight and six, don’t tell Google that you can — see the missed-call change.

4. Your reviews are thin

Even when you rank, the customer still chooses. Three names on screen, and yours has eleven reviews against their two hundred. Fix the habit, not the budget: how to get more reviews.

5. Your job types don’t match what people search

Too few and you’re invisible for work you’d happily take; too many and you’re buying enquiries you’ll never quote. Go through the list properly and tick what you actually do — this is also what stops you paying for bad-fit leads you can no longer get credited.

6. The hours on your profile are wrong

“Open now” is shown to the customer and used by the system. A business marked open at 7pm that nobody staffs at 7pm gets the calls, loses them, and pays twice — in lost jobs and in lost ranking.

The order I’d fix them in

  • Verification status — nothing else matters until the badge is there
  • Who answers the phone, and when
  • Service areas, narrowed to the truth
  • Job types, ticked deliberately
  • Review habit, started this week
  • Budget — last, not first

Raising the budget on an account with the first five wrong just buys more expensive silence. That is how most businesses conclude “LSAs don’t work”, when what didn’t work was the setup.
