Local Services Ads vs Google Ads

Same invoice, different machines.

They both say “Google ads” on the invoice, and that’s where the similarity ends. Local Services Ads sell you enquiries from a verified profile. Google Search Ads sell you clicks to a page you control. Choosing between them isn’t about which is better — it’s about which machine suits the job you need doing.

Where Local Services Ads win outright

Emergency and near-emergency work. Blocked drain, lost keys, boiler out, end-of-tenancy clean booked for Friday. The customer isn’t reading your website — they’re picking one of three names with a tick and a star rating and pressing call. You can’t out-write that with better ad copy, and being below it costs you the job.

They also suit businesses with a genuine review advantage. If you’ve got hundreds of five-star reviews and your competitor has eleven, LSAs put that gap in front of the customer at the exact moment they choose. Search ads hide it.

Where search ads still beat them

Three situations, honestly:

  • Your service isn’t eligible. Plenty of categories aren’t covered, and some professional sectors have been rolled out cautiously in the UK.
  • The buyer researches before they ring. Contract cleaning, commercial fit-out, anything sold on a proposal — they want to read a page, see your accreditations, maybe download something. LSAs give you no page to send them to.
  • You need control of the message. Specific offers, specific wording, compliance-sensitive claims: with LSAs, Google writes the ad from your profile and you don’t get a say.

Running both without wasting money

Most local service businesses end up with both, and the split is straightforward: LSAs take the urgent, high-intent searches where being first matters more than being eloquent. Search ads take the longer-tail and considered queries where a landing page does the selling — and get negative keywords so they stop bidding on the searches your LSA already owns.

Do it the other way round — heavy search spend on “emergency plumber near me” while your Local Services profile sits unverified — and you’re paying premium prices to appear underneath the businesses that did the boring admin.

The honest health warning about both

Neither fixes a business that can’t answer its phone. LSAs punish you for it directly, in ranking and now in billing; search ads simply let you pay for silence. Before adding either, make sure somebody picks up during the hours you’ve told Google you’re open.

If you’re weighing up cost per job between the two, what LSAs cost in the UK has the pay-per-lead maths, and Google Verified explained covers the checks you’ll need to pass first.

And if you are not sure LSAs are even open to your trade, start with which UK businesses can use Local Services Ads.

Quick answers

Are Local Services Ads better than Google Ads?

For urgent local work, usually yes — they sit above search ads and you pay per enquiry rather than per click. For research-led or non-eligible services, search ads win because you control the message and the landing page.

Can I run Local Services Ads and Google Ads together?

Yes, and most local firms end up doing both. Let Local Services Ads take the urgent high-intent searches, and use negative keywords so your search ads stop bidding on the same queries.

Which appears higher on Google?

Local Services Ads. They sit at the very top of the results and on Maps, above both search ads and the organic listings.
