Which UK businesses can use Local Services Ads?
The short answer: if you go to the customer and the job is urgent or local, you are probably eligible. Local Services Ads were built for trades and home services first, and Google has been widening the list into professional services since. What has not changed is that this is a closed list — you pick a category Google offers, you cannot invent one.
Three questions that decide it
- Is your trade on Google’s category list? If there is no category, there is no ad.
- Can you pass the checks? Licences where your trade needs them, public liability insurance, identity and background checks.
- Do you serve a definable local area? LSAs match on proximity, so a national-only business has nothing to match against.
Trades that are well served
The home-services categories are the oldest and the deepest:
- Plumbing and drainage, including emergency call-outs
- Electricians and electrical repair
- Heating, boilers, HVAC and air conditioning
- Roofing, guttering and exterior repair
- Locksmiths
- Cleaning and facilities — domestic, end of tenancy, carpets, windows, commercial
- Pest control
- Garage doors, windows and doors, flooring, painting and general handyman work
- Landscaping, tree surgery and grounds maintenance
- Removals and house clearance
- Appliance and applianced-in repairs, plus other on-site repair trades
Professional services
This is the newer, patchier end. Google has extended Local Services Ads into professional categories — legal and financial among them — but availability in the UK has moved cautiously and category by category, with legal work in particular rolled out in limited areas before wider release. If you are a solicitor, accountant, financial adviser or estate agent, treat eligibility as a question to check rather than an assumption, because it changes.
Where you will hit a wall
Two different limits get confused with each other, so it is worth separating them:
- No category means no Local Services Ads at all. Product sellers, online-only services, and trades Google has not defined a category for fall here.
- No badge is different. Google Verified is not offered in some verticals — automotive, beauty and dining among them — so even where ads exist, the trust tick may not.
There is also a practical wall that has nothing to do with Google. If nobody can answer the phone during your own stated opening hours, you are eligible on paper and unsuitable in practice: missed calls cost you ranking, and from 1 October 2026 some of them can cost you money too.
What eligibility does not tell you
Being allowed in is not the same as it being worth it. A trade with £80 average jobs in a city where ten rivals are bidding may find the maths tight; the same trade twenty miles out, with better reviews, may find it the cheapest work it has ever bought. That is an arithmetic question, and it is covered in what Local Services Ads cost in the UK.
How to check your own category properly
Search the way your customer would — on a phone, in your town, for the job you actually want — and look at whether a Local Services block appears at all and who is in it. If three verified rivals are sitting there, your category exists and you are simply not in it. If nothing appears, either the category is not live in your area or the searches you care about are not triggering it, which changes the whole plan.
That check is the first thing I do in a free LSA check, before anybody spends anything — along with whether you can pass the Google Verified checks.
Quick answers
Which trades can use Local Services Ads in the UK?
Most home and trade services — plumbing, electrical, heating, roofing, locksmiths, cleaning, pest control, landscaping, removals and similar — plus a growing list of professional categories.
Are solicitors and accountants eligible for Local Services Ads?
Professional categories exist, but UK availability has been rolled out cautiously and changes over time, so eligibility should be checked for your specific category rather than assumed.
Which categories cannot get the Google Verified badge?
Google Verified is not offered in some verticals, including automotive, beauty and dining, so ads may exist in a category without the trust tick being available.
